Our Approach

At the Studio, we believe an organization grows well when its operational design and workplace strength evolve in tandem. Growth changes what an organization needs and places new demands on the people, relationships, and conditions that make strong performance possible.

Our approach is grounded in an “Appreciative” stance. An Appreciative approach is a disciplined way of leading and designing that builds on strengths, holds high standards, and expands what becomes possible. It helps leaders navigate growth with greater clarity while strengthening the trust, accountability, and capability that allow people and organizations to thrive.

The Ceiling Navigation Model and The Appreciative Workplace

Two disciplines that help organizations grow with clarity, strength, and possibility.

Ceiling Navigation Model: A practical model for understanding how organizations grow through distinct phases or ‘altitudes’, encounter predictable ceilings and redesign to restore performance and coherence.

Elements of an Appreciative Workplace: A practical way to strengthen the everyday conditions of work—how people collaborate, lead, learn, and perform—so organizations can grow with trust, capability, and consistency.

Three Journeys of Organizational Growth

Organizations do not grow in a straight line. As they expand, they move through distinct phases that require different structures, leadership approaches, and ways of working.

The Ceiling Navigation Model brings these shifts into focus through three distinct, but inseparable journeys.

The Growth Journey

As organizations scale, they move through phases that require new structures, roles, and rhythms of coordination. Decision rights shift, leadership layers evolve, and new forms of alignment are needed to manage increasing complexity.

The Ceiling Navigation Model helps leaders recognize these transitions and design the organization for the phase it is entering.

The Leadership Journey

As the organization grows, leadership must evolve with it. Leaders must expand how they see, decide, empower, and coordinate. What could once be carried by a few individuals must be distributed across a broader leadership system.

Growth requires not only a redesigned organization, but a deeper bench of leadership capacity.

The Workplace Journey

The workplace is the day-to-day experience of the organization. It is where leadership is practiced, where trust is built, and where collaboration, learning, and development unfold.

The Appreciative Workplace strengthens these conditions so the organization can grow without eroding trust, capability, or coherence.

Distinct, But Inseparable

These journeys shape one another at every stage of growth. When leaders focus only on growth mechanics, such as strategy, revenue and structure, organizations may scale, but growth becomes brittle. When leaders invest in the workplace without understanding the demands of growth, strain intensifies and redesign comes too late. And when leadership capacity does not evolve, the organization cannot carry the transitions that growth ceilings require.

Healthy Growth Requires All Three

  • The Ceiling Navigation Model helps leaders see and design for the organization’s growth journey.

  • The leadership journey builds the capacity to guide that transition.

  • The Appreciative Workplace strengthens the conditions that allow both to function well.

Together, they support growth that is clear, disciplined, and sustainable.

“Appreciative” as a Discipline

An Appreciative approach does not ignore problems or lower standards. Instead, it expands the evidence leaders use.

Alongside risks and constraints, Appreciative practice pays attention to strengths, capabilities, and what is already working well. This broader view gives leaders better information for decision making. It helps them see what should be protected, what must evolve, and what new capabilities need to be built.

An Appreciative stance also strengthens accountability. It supports rigorous decisions while sustaining the trust and shared responsibility that allow teams and organizations to learn and perform under pressure.

In this way, Appreciative Leadership is both practical and disciplined. It is a way of navigating growth while strengthening the human systems that make strong performance possible.

Practice and Proof

The Studio’s approach grew out of more than two decades of practice at EnCompass.

Working in the complexity of international development, we built a successful, values-led business while navigating the same growth transitions many organizations face. Over time, EnCompass became a living lab for Appreciative practice.

Through that experience we learned that disciplined Appreciative Leadership helps organizations navigate complexity without losing what makes them strong. It supports growth that is intentional and sustainable.

The Studio brings those lessons forward as frameworks, tools, and learning designed to help leaders and organizations grow well.
